Andrew Scott has signed on to join the second season of the BBC/HBO’s adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials.

He will play Colonel John Parry, the father of Will Parry, who is also known as Doctor Stanislaus Grumman or Jopari.

In the books, Scott’s character accidentally travels to Lyra’s world where he becomes a renowned scholar and shaman. His dæmon in the novels takes the form of an osprey.

The first season is expected to air later this year and stars Dafne Keen as Lyra, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel and Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter while Lin-Manuel Miranda plays Lee Scoresby.

The cast also includes Anne-Marie Duff, Clarke Peters and James Cosmo.
