I wanted to start by paying tribute to Chadwick Boseman who has passed away after a four year battle with colon cancer. Obviously, everyone is extremely shocked by the news as he kept his diagnosis secret. I first saw him playing James Brown in Get on Up, and I thought then that he was a brilliant actor who would go on to have a huge career.
I guess most people know him for playing Black Panther. I was lucky enough to attend the film’s UK premiere and I will never forget the reaction when he walked into the room, everyone was so excited to see him, to see the film, to see a black superhero. He shouldered that responsibility extremely well, and if you’ve looked at social media today you will see the work he did off screen to help inspire young children.
There is the possibility we could see him in awards contention. He stars alongside Viola Davis in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom which is coming to Netflix later this year. It’s about a 1920s band who are waiting for blues singer Ma Rainey to arrive for a recording session. Boseman has been tipped as a possible Oscar nominee for his role as trumpeter Levee.
Normal People’s Paul Mescal is making his film debut alongside Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley in The Lost Daughter. The film is about the conflicting emotions of a mother’s relationship with her children and will be directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal.
The X Files is returning, but in a different form than we’ve seen before. An animated comedy series is being developed by Fox in the United States. The new show would follow cases that are too wacky or ridiculous to be investigated by Mulder and Scully. X Files creator Chris Carter is attached to executive produce the project. We will be watching what happens…
Richard Gere, Diane Keaton and Lin-Manuel Miranda are set to star in a new romantic comedy called The Making Of. It’s about a long-married couple who decide to make a film about their lives. They cast a couple of younger actors to play them, but as filming begins the older couple’s relationship begins to fall apart. Filming’s expected to begin in the spring.
