It’s already taken Sundance by storm and is many people’s tip for the Oscars and now Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation has a confirmed UK release date.

The film will debut in UK cinemas on January 20.

As well as directing, Parker stars alongside Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller, Aja Naomi King and Gabrielle Union.

The film follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher, whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. As he witnesses countless atrocities – against himself and his fellow slaves – Nat orchestrates an uprising in the hopes of leading his people to freedom.
