Emma Thompson joins Matilda

Emma Thompson has joined the cast of the film adaptation of Matilda the Musical.

She’s taken over the role of Miss Trunchbull in the film from Ralph Fiennes, who was all but confirmed in the part last year.

Producers have taken the decision cast an actress in the role – in the stage production Miss Trunchbull is played by a man. “It’s part of that whole reconceiving of the story, that Trunchbull can now be played by a woman,” said director Matthew Warchus.

Thompson joins Lashana Lynch who has previously been confirmed to play Miss Honey, as well as newcomer Alisha Weir who has been cast in the title role.

Filming begins at Shepperton Studios in April.
