John Lithgow to play Roald Dahl in play about the author

John Lithgow is heading back to the UK to star in a new play about the life of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory author Roald Dahl.

The cast of Giant will also include Romola Garai as Dahl’s publisher, Jessie Stone.

Set in the summer of 1983, the play focuses on the fallout from Dahl’s antisemitic comments in the press, as the author grapples with the decision to make a public apology or risk his reputation. It unfolds over a single afternoon at Dahl’s family home.

It will mark Lighgow’s Royal Court debut. “I’m thrilled to be performing at The Royal Court where I’ve seen so much great work, stretching all the way back to the late 1960s,” said the actor. “There’s no better place to unveil Mark Rosenblatt’s stunning new play.”

Giant will be on stage from 20th September to 16th November.
