Cannes casting – May 12

Every day new films are being announced during the Cannes Film Festival. Here’s a round-up of some of the latest including new roles for Lily James, Jim Broadbent and Alicia Vikander.

Cinderella’s Lily James will star alongside Christoher Plummer in spy thriller, The Kaiser’s Last Kiss. The story is set in the early years of World War II, in the aftemath of the Nazi invasion of the Netherlands in 1940. Former monarch Kaiser Wilhelm has been living in exile since 1917 and in an attempt to thwart the Nazis, the Dutch resistance work with Winston Churchill to insert an agent into the Kaiser’s household. A lethally dangerous love affair ignites between a German officer and a young Jewish Dutch woman (James) with devastating consequences as the Nazis race to identify and eliminate the agent behind the potentially disastrous defection of their former Emperor to England. Filming begins in the autumn.

Jim Broadbent has signed on to star in Sense of an Ending. It follows Tony Webster, who, when presented with a mysterious legacy, finds himself contending with a past he had never thought much about. As he delves back into his personal history, he is forced to reassess his relationships with those closest to him and revise his understanding of his own nature.

Rising star Alicia Vikander’s next project will be appearing alongside Tom Hanks in the thriller, The Circle. The story follows a recent college graduate who lands a job at a powerful tech company called The Circle, which is co-owned by a charismatic man (Hanks). Always interesting to see Tom Hanks play against type!

Not playing against type will be Liam Neeson who’s in final talks to star in the terrorism-themed thriller, A Willing Patriot. Neeson will portray a CIA agent who engages in an elaborate cat-and-mouse game with a sinister terrorist who’s planning an imminent attack. He’ll risk everything, including his own life, to stop his foe and avenge his mysterious past.
