The latest round of projects announced at Cannes include new roles for Richard Armitage, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman and the return of David Brent.
Let’s begin with the news that Ricky Gervais will revive his character from The Office for the big screen in new film, Life on the Road. The film will follow Brent as he continues to try and be a rock star by self-financing a tour with his band Foregone Conclusion.
“I’m so excited that the world will see what David Brent is up to now and where his future lies,” Gervais said. “This film delves much more into his private life than ‘The Office’ ever did and we really get to peel back the layers of this extraordinary, ordinary man.”
Gervais will star in, direct and write the film.
Oscar winner Anne Hathaway has signed on to star in Colossal, whihc is being described as mix between Godzilla and meets Being John Malkovich!! The story follows Gloria, an ordinary woman who begins to realise she is strangely connected to a series of lizard attacks in Tokyo through the power of her mind. Definitely sounds intriguing!
Richard Armitage and Naomie Harris are to co-star in action drama Clearance. The film is about a land mine clearance expert and his pregnant girlfriend who are kidnapped in South Dudan and must get through a huge minefield in order to escape. Filming is expected to begin in November.
Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz will star in a new film about Colombian drug boss Pablo Escobar.
The film is based on the book Loving Pablo, Hating Escobar about journalist Virginia Vallejo’s relationship with Escobar during the 1980s. Filming is expected to take place sometime this year.
Natalie Portman will star alongside Lily-Rose Depp (Johnny’s daughter) in 1930’s set drama Planetarium. The pair will play spiritualist sisters who are believed to have the ability to connect with ghosts. Filming is expected to begin in Paris in September.
Nicole Kidman is in talks to star in How To Talk To Girls At Parties, the new film from Hedwig creator John Cameron Mitchell. Ruth Wilson, Matt Lucas and Elle Fanning are also among the cast. The story follows an alien who meets two young inhabitants of what’s described as the most dangerous place on Earth: Croydon. Filming is due to begin in the UK this autumn.
