Game of Thrones actor Tobias Menzies has been cast as the new Prince Philip in The Crown.

He will take over the role from Matt Smith in season three which is expected to begin filming in July.

Paul Bettany had been in early talks to play before he abdicated for unspecified reasons.

Menzies has previously played Brutus in HBO’s Rome, Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones, and the dual roles of Frank Randall and Black Jack Randall in Outlander.

He joins Olivia Colman who is to take over the role of Elizabeth, and Helena Bonham Carter playing Princess Margaret.
